“Blast it!” Ginny was in the library working on the books and sneaking peeks out to the patio to make sure the rehearsal dinner was going well when the lights went off. Angry, she slid off her glasses and pushed away from the table. “What the heck is wrong now?”

She glanced out at the patio. It had been lit up so pretty earlier with the lanterns, but now there was nothing. Fumbling her way through the pitch black of the moonless night, she made her way toward the kitchen, pausing halfway at the sound of someone crashing into something in the direction of the dining room. The air was filled with murmured voices and the occasional laugh from one of the confused wedding party guests.

She also heard Reid’s calm, confident voice and was infinitely grateful for him to keep things on the patio under control while she checked out what was wrong. Ginny headed for the dining room, a cold chill surrounding her.

Looking around in the darkness, she whispered, “Dooley, is that you? Is this your doing?”

No answer. Was she actually starting to believe in the ghost? Was it silly to expect him to answer?

What the heck, she had nothing to lose. She tried again. “Dooley, I don’t know what you want from me. I put the shakers where you wanted, and you said if I did that then you’d help me. If you’re a man of your word, then you won’t ruin my first event here at the inn!”

Silence.

Disappointment coursed through her. Of course, Dooley wasn’t real, and even if he was, she couldn’t expect him to magically turn the lights on to help her. She chided herself for being so fanciful. She had an inn to run and a business to save.

Ginny sighed and started out of the dining room, only to be halted by the sound of a deep man’s voice behind her. “Very well, but it is not I who cut the lights. I will see what I can do for a remedy, but I think you should look at the southwest corner of the house for the true culprit.”

Frozen with fright, Ginny didn’t move a muscle as another whoosh of cold air rushed around her, and suddenly every candle they’d put out in the inn for the ceremony burst into flame, casting the whole place in warm, golden light.

Delighted gasps and clapping sounded from the wedding party on the patio, along with exclamations of “Oh, how romantic!” and “So cool! How did they do that?”

Limbs shaking and breath rapid, Ginny grabbed a flashlight from one of the drawers in the dining room and headed straight for the location Dooley had given her. At the southwest corner of the building, her heart dropped to her toes.

The electrical box was open and the wires cut.

She’d been starting to think all the little things that had gone wrong were just coincidence, but now she knew for sure.

Someone did not want this wedding to happen.
